Philanthropy and service to our fellow man is a core value and has become an everyday facet of our chapter, which has strengthened our chapter and brotherhood. We strive to better the lives of others through our hard work upholding our fraternal ideals of Love, Honor and Truth, while extending the helping hand to those less fortunate. Like other chapter programs our Philanthropy Program is first committed to excellence and we embrace the statement of Past Regent Robert Durham, “there is no Honor in mediocrity.” We hold this as the central tenant of our chapter, as a key objective, and it has yielded results.

In the last 3 years, we have set a renewed level excellence in our philanthropic and service endeavors that we are proud of. Since that time, our chapter has forged strong, and lasting relationships with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society through our highly regarded annual END MS Benefit Concert, and our local Habitat for Humanity chapter in Statesboro through our Habitat for Humanity workdays we hold each semester.

The Chapter’s Philanthropy Program is based on these key goals:

    • Members completing at least 10 hours of service each semester
    • A minimum of two Habitat for Humanity workdays each semester
    • Our signature END MS Benefit Concert each October
    • Our new RIF: Blues, BBQ & Books each April with ΚΚΓ Sorority
    • Our Annual Island Party with Philanthropic Volleyball Tournament
    • Joining other organizations philanthropic efforts as well as continuous improvement in our efforts

In three years, Theta Kappa has donated nearly $30,000 to charitable causes, and completed over 1000 hours of community service. During that timeframe, we have been honored with numerous awards and accolades including top fundraising honors at the first ever Georgia Southern Relay for Life in 2013, “Most Outstanding Charitable Fundraiser of the Year” (2012-2013 END MS Benefit Concert), and Georgia Southern University’s 2013-14 “Most Outstanding Philanthropy Program of the Year”.

Our success is a result of more than the work of the undergraduate chapter. Our success is a due of the combined efforts of Theta Kappa collegiate brothers, friends, family, and Alumni. Our collegiate members provide the physical labor and effort for these programs; our alumni, parents, family, and friends have provided the financial resources for the philanthropic success. We recognize our success as a true community effort, and we would like to thank our supporters, and encourage others to support our program in the future. Thank you all, and God bless.

I am the Community Service & Philanthropic Chairman for the Theta Kappa Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity. In 2013 our chapter won the 2012-13 GSU Leadership Award for “Outstanding Charitable Fundraiser of the Year”! The award recognized the October 2012 Multiple Sclerosis Benefit Concert (ΣND MS Benefit) as the most outstanding charitable fundraiser, which Brian organized and led. Theta Kappa donated close to $5,000 to the Georgia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Additionally the chapter has participated in four Habitat for Humanity projects, the GSU Relay for Life where they won the Golden Eagle Award as the top fundraiser, and a “Real Men Read” Reading Project (candidate class) to a local elementary school all during the 2012-2013 school year.

In the 2013-14 School Year we do not plan to rest on our laurels, but rather grow our efforts significantly. Our efforts are not motivated by awards or recognition, but rather our sincere desire to extend the helping hand to those in need. Our plan includes:

    • Expanding the ΣΝD MS Benefit Concert in Fall 2013 to a permanent and lasting service project
    • Continuing our "Real Men Read" project to include a Children's Illiteracy Program with a book drive
    • Enhancing our participation in Habitat for Humanity for Bulloch County
      • Habitat for Humanity is one of Sigma Nu's National Helping Hand Initiatives - our efforts are focused locally
      • This April we will double our effort with Habitat in our our Founder's month of Service
      • If an alumnus of Theta Kappa tell us about your involvement in Habitat
    • In the Spring Semester, we will focus our attention on the GSU Relay for Life that benefits the American Cancer Society.
    • We will see to record all of our alumni, family, parents, and friends involvement in Community Service and with the Helping Hand Initiatives.

in 2013, our chapter was presented an award at a banquet held at Georgia Southern on Thursday, April 25, 2013 - this was the 2012-13 GSU Leadership Award for “Outstanding Charitable Fundraiser of the Year”. Brian Griffin, our past Community Service Chairman accepted the award on behalf of the Chapter. To read more about this award and see photos, please click here.
